Heartgard vs Revolution Expert's CommentsHeartgard Plus, and the generic medications containing ivermectin (the active ingredient in Heartgard) prevent heartworm disease. These are sold as once monthly tablets. Heartgard has no effect on fleas or intestinal worms, so it will be necessary to treat for these with another product, or products.
In addition to heartworm prevention, Revolution kills adult fleas and prevents egg stages of fleas hatching. It also treats ear mites in cats and dogs. It treats sacroptes mites and the American Dog Tick in dogs and intestinal worms - roundworms and hookworms - in cats. It is a once monthly topical liquid applied to the skin. In dogs, it will be necessary to treat for intestinal worms with another product.
Which product you use depends on the time of year, the areas you live in, and so which other parasites you need to control and whether you wish to combine the heartworm prevention with other parasite treatments. All of these are very good products which are both safe and effective. For more information, visit our product sites Heartgard Plus and Revolution. Heartgard vs Revolution - Customers' FeedbackI use revolution, it seems scary to put that many chemicals on your dog, but when it was pitched to me I was told that it has been used in Africa for a few decades to control intestinal parasites in children. It is applied on the kids there as it is to dogs here, on the back of the neck. It was my understanding that Revolution repelled mosquitoes (in addition to fleas, etc.). Since they are vectors for so many diseases this controls the heartworm. I really didn't like Revolution all that much, as I had tick problems with it that I don't have at all with Frontline. I used to use advantage but for a little more money I switched to revolution b/c it covers almost everything and it works great and is water proof. Revolution has one drug in it. It controls heartworms, the most common flea, mange and ear mites, but only kills the tick Dermacentor variabilis (the most common but there are three other ticks that are common as well). Nothing for internal parasites (round, hook, and whipworms). Heartgard plus has two drugs and controls heartworms, round, hook, and whipworms. Doesn't control ticks, fleas, or mites. I prefer revolution as it prevents flea and ticks to Whether its Heartguard or Revolution , both hv it's different profiles. While heartguard is for heart worm prevention plus some other small worms elimination n Revolution prevents only tick n fleas but not heart worm prevention , so it all depends on how often it's yr dog out for running, walking or excercising. These two products help in heartworm prevention PROVIDED your dog isn't already infected. Because your puppy is > 6 months old, your vet would probably do a blood test to ensure that he is clear of heartworms before putting him on any heartworm prevention. Each of these products (Heartgard and Revolution) has its pros and cons. Heartgard is in tablet form and is easy to feed because it's flavoured (beef I think). However, apart from heartworms, it only covers roundworms and hookworms. Revolution is a spot-on application (external application) but it gives your dog protection against external parasites like flea, mites and SOME ticks. REVOLUTION (applied topically): Prevents heartworms, kills adult fleas and prevents egg stages of fleas hatching. It also treats ear mites, sacroptes mites and ticks*. It does NOT treat intestinal worms in dogs. HEARTGARD PLUS (IVERMECTIN & PYRANTEL): Prevents heartworms, controls roundworms and hookworms due to the added ingredient.
